Babylon to Be Destroyed

¹⁴This is what the Lord your ^(A)Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel says:

“For your sake I have sent to Babylon,
And will bring them all down as fugitives,
^[a]Even the ^(B)Chaldeans, into the ^(C)ships ^[b]over which they rejoice.
¹⁵I am the Lord, your Holy One,
^(D)The Creator of Israel, your ^(E)King.”

¹⁶This is what the Lord says,

He who ^(F)makes a way through the sea
And a path through the mighty waters,
¹⁷Who brings out the ^(G)chariot and the horse,
The army and the mighty man
(They will lie down together and not rise again;
They have been ^(H)extinguished, and have gone out like a wick):
¹⁸“^(I)Do not call to mind the former things,
Or consider things of the past.
¹⁹Behold, I am going to do something ^(J)new,
Now it will spring up;
Will you not be aware of it?
I will even ^(K)make a roadway in the wilderness,
Rivers in the desert.
²⁰The animals of the field will glorify Me,
The ^(L)jackals and the ostriches,
Because I have ^(M)given waters in the wilderness
And rivers in the desert,
To give drink to My chosen people.
²¹The people whom ^(N)I formed for Myself
^(O)Will declare My praise.

The Shortcomings of Israel

²²“Yet you have not called on Me, Jacob;
But you have become ^(P)weary of Me, Israel.
²³You have ^(Q)not brought to Me the sheep of your burnt offerings,
Nor have you ^(R)honored Me with your sacrifices.
I have not ^(S)burdened you with ^[c]offerings,
Nor wearied you with ^(T)incense.
²⁴You have not bought Me ^[d]^(U)sweet cane with money,
Nor have you satisfied Me with the fat of your sacrifices;
Rather, you have burdened Me with your sins,
You have ^(V)wearied Me with your wrongdoings.

²⁵“I, I alone, am the one who ^(W)wipes out your wrongdoings ^(X)for My own sake,
And I will ^(Y)not remember your sins.
²⁶^[e]Meet Me in court, ^(Z)let’s argue our case together;
State your cause, ^(AA)so that you may be proved right.
²⁷Your ^(AB)first ^[f]forefather sinned,
And your ^[g]^(AC)spokesmen have rebelled against Me.
²⁸So I will profane the ^[h]officials of the sanctuary,
And I will turn Jacob over to ^(AD)destruction and Israel to ^(AE)abuse.

The Blessings of Israel

44 “But now listen, Jacob, My ^(AF)servant,
And Israel, whom I have chosen:
²This is what the Lord says, He who made you
And ^(AG)formed you from the womb, who ^(AH)will help you:
‘^(AI)Do not fear, Jacob My servant,
And ^[i]^(AJ)Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.
³For ^(AK)I will pour water on ^[j]the thirsty land
And streams on the dry ground;
I will ^(AL)pour out My Spirit on your ^(AM)offspring,
And My blessing on your descendants;
⁴And they will spring up ^[k]among the grass
Like ^(AN)poplars by streams of water.’
⁵This one will say, ‘I am the Lord’s’;
And that one ^[l]will call on the name of Jacob;
And another will ^(AO)write ^[m]on his hand, ‘Belonging to the Lord,’
And will give himself Israel’s name with honor.

3 Hear this word which the Lord has spoken against you, sons of Israel, against the entire ^[a]^(A)family which ^[b]He brought up from the land of Egypt:

²“^(B)You only have I ^[c]known among all the families of the earth;
Therefore I will ^[d]^(C)punish you for all your wrongdoing.”
³Do two people walk together unless they have agreed to meet?
⁴Does a ^(D)lion roar in the forest when he has no prey?
Does a young lion ^[e]growl from his den unless he has captured something?
⁵Does a bird fall into a trap on the ground when there is no ^[f]device in it?
Does a trap spring up from the earth when it captures nothing at all?
⁶If a ^(E)trumpet is blown in a city, will the people not tremble?
If a ^(F)disaster occurs in a city, has the Lord not brought it about?
⁷^[g]Certainly the Lord ^[h]God does nothing
Unless He ^(G)reveals His secret plan
To His servants the prophets.
⁸A ^(H)lion has roared! Who will not fear?
The ^(I)Lord God has spoken! ^(J)Who can do anything but prophesy?

⁹Proclaim on the citadels in ^(K)Ashdod and on the citadels in the land of Egypt and say, “Assemble yourselves on the ^(L)mountains of Samaria and see the great panic within her and the ^(M)oppressions in her midst. ¹⁰But they ^(N)do not know how to do what is right,” declares the Lord, “these who ^(O)store up ^[i]violence and devastation in their citadels.”

¹¹Therefore, this is what the Lord God says:

“An ^(P)enemy, one surrounding the land,
Will take down your fortifications from you,
And your ^(Q)citadels will be looted.”

¹²This is what the Lord says:

“Just as the shepherd ^[j]^(R)snatches from the lion’s mouth a couple of legs or a piece of an ear,
So will the sons of Israel living in Samaria be ^[k]snatched away—
With the ^(S)corner of a bed and the ^[l]^(T)cover of a couch!
¹³Hear and ^(U)testify against the house of Jacob,”
Declares the Lord God, the God of armies.
¹⁴“For on the day that I punish Israel’s offenses,
I will also punish the altars of ^(V)Bethel;
The horns of the altar will be cut off,
And will fall to the ground.
¹⁵I will also strike the ^(W)winter house together with the ^(X)summer house;
The houses of ^[m]^(Y)ivory will also perish,
And the ^(Z)great houses will come to an end,”
Declares the Lord.

The Blessings of Redemption

To the ^[b]^(D)saints who are ^[c]at ^(E)Ephesus and ^(F)are faithful in ^(G)Christ Jesus: ²^(H)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

²²The next day ^(A)the crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other small boat there except one, and that Jesus ^(B)had not gotten into the boat with His disciples, but that His disciples had departed alone. ²³Other small boats came from ^(C)Tiberias near to the place where they ate the bread after the ^(D)Lord ^(E)had given thanks. ²⁴So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats and ^(F)came to Capernaum, looking for Jesus. ²⁵And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “^(G)Rabbi, when did You get here?”

Words to the People

²⁶Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you ^(H)seek Me, not because you saw ^[a]^(I)signs, but because you ate some of the loaves and were filled. ²⁷Do not ^(J)work for the food that perishes, but for the food that lasts for ^(K)eternal life, which ^(L)the Son of Man will give you, for on Him the Father, God, ^(M)has set His ^[b]seal.” ²⁸Therefore they said to Him, “What are we to do, so that we may accomplish the works of God?” ²⁹Jesus answered and said to them, “This is ^(N)the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He ^(O)has sent.” ³⁰So they said to Him, “^(P)What then are You doing as a ^(Q)sign, so that we may see, and believe You? ³⁵Jesus said to them, “^(V)I am the bread of life; the one who comes to Me will not be hungry, and the one who believes in Me ^(W)will never be thirsty. ³⁶But ^(X)I said to you that you have indeed seen Me, and yet you do not believe. ³⁷^(Y)Everything that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I certainly will not cast out. ³⁸For ^(Z)I have come down from heaven, ^(AA)not to do My own will, but ^(AB)the will of Him who ^(AC)sent Me. ³⁹And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of ^(AD)everything that He has given Me I will ^(AE)lose nothing, but will ^(AF)raise it up on the last day. ⁴⁰For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who ^(AG)sees the Son and ^(AH)believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will ^(AI)raise him up on the last day.”
